This week, Washington VIPs competed in the 30th annual ACLI Capital Challenge, a 3-mile footrace highlighting that even the nation’s busiest leaders can devote time to physical fitness. The friendly competition also sought to determine which branch of government is the fastest, with 125 teams representing the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches and the media.

One of The Century Council’s 20 People to Watch, Sen. Kelly Ayotte logged an impressive 26:40 making her the fastest female senator. She was also recognized for having the worst team name: It’s Not a Boat, it’s “Ayotte.” (Hey, we like it!) Other winners included:

  • Fastest Senator, Sen. John Thune (18:54)
  • Fastest Congresswoman, Rep. Jean Schmidt (24:49)
  • Fastest Congressman, Rep. Aaron Schock (20:12)

“Ironman” Sen. Dick Lugar, age 79, has never missed the race and finished in 44:40 – kudos to him!

The American Council of Life Insurers, a DC-based trade association, sponsored the event at Hains Point and donated all entry fees and additional contributions to Special Olympics DC. Since its inception, the race has raised over 7,000. We applaud all the runners who supported this cause and set a great example for America’s kids by encouraging sportsmanship and promoting healthy lifestyles.
