Capitol Hill: Healthy America briefing on teen driver safety

Today, The Century Council was excited to join with many policy leaders in Washington, DC to hear about measures to address teen drivers and the dangers of texting and driving. The “Healthy America” policy briefing sponsored by Allstate and The Hill had leaders from both chambers of Congress, various Federal Agencies and national advocacy groups in one room to discuss distracted driving and other research on Graduated Drivers Licensing programs.

There are many distractions for experienced drivers and these are only multiplied for novice drivers who are still figuring out how to merge their vehicle onto the interstate. Driver education in the United States has come a long way in the past decade, but we need to make sure that our teenagers are getting the best from us. One way to help out is to be an excellent role model for our youth. When a teenager witnesses an adult driving and using their cell phone, they may think that it is ok for them to do the same thing. By leading by example, we can make sure our best habits are passed on to our youngest drivers.

Thanks again to Allstate and The Hill for putting together an excellent briefing. And a special thanks to Senator Amy Klobuchar, Representatives Tim Bishop and Randy Hulgren, and NHTSA Administrator David Strickland. The leadership they provide at the national level will make a difference in our local communities.

A Healthy Political Race

This week, Washington VIPs competed in the 30th annual ACLI Capital Challenge, a 3-mile footrace highlighting that even the nation’s busiest leaders can devote time to physical fitness. The friendly competition also sought to determine which branch of government is the fastest, with 125 teams representing the Legislative, Executive and Judicial Branches and the media.

One of The Century Council’s 20 People to Watch, Sen. Kelly Ayotte logged an impressive 26:40 making her the fastest female senator. She was also recognized for having the worst team name: It’s Not a Boat, it’s “Ayotte.” (Hey, we like it!) Other winners included:

  • Fastest Senator, Sen. John Thune (18:54)
  • Fastest Congresswoman, Rep. Jean Schmidt (24:49)
  • Fastest Congressman, Rep. Aaron Schock (20:12)

“Ironman” Sen. Dick Lugar, age 79, has never missed the race and finished in 44:40 – kudos to him!

The American Council of Life Insurers, a DC-based trade association, sponsored the event at Hains Point and donated all entry fees and additional contributions to Special Olympics DC. Since its inception, the race has raised over 7,000. We applaud all the runners who supported this cause and set a great example for America’s kids by encouraging sportsmanship and promoting healthy lifestyles.
